Oprah's Book Club was a book discussion club segment of The Oprah Winfrey Show. The club was created to be able to connect with the viewers on a specific topic. The book club began on 1996 where Oprah chose a book, allowed time for viewers to read it and discuss every month. This segment lasted for 15 years for which the club was able to recommend a total 70 books.
The book club became widely popular which resulted to popularity of then obscure titles. The books sold several million copies, the obscure title became bestsellers-this is because of the Oprah effect. Oprah had and still has the ability to turn a book into an overnight success. Turning the authors into instant celebrities.
The first book selected on September 17, 1996 was a novel, The Deep End of the Ocean written by Jacquelyn Mitchard. On 2002 Oprah discontinued the book club for a year in search for contemporary novels. On 2003, it was revived but limited from three to four a year. On 2007 Winfrey returned to fiction with her selections of The Road by Cormac McCarthy in March and Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides in June. By October 5, 2007 she announced her latest collection: Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This segment of The Oprah Winfrey show motivated millions of erstwhile non-readers to pick books and read.
